Status Epilepticus In Children
Dr. Şakir ALTUNBAŞAKa
aÇocuk Nörolojisi BD, Çukurova Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ADANA Status epilepticus (SE) is an emergency state with a significant mortality and morbidity. Early assessment and appopriate intervention reduces the rates of negative outcome. SE is defined as on epileptic activiting lasting longe than 30 minutes with a wide range of symptomatology due to a variety of pathopysiological, anatomical, and other etiological bases. It has been shown that it is more and more difficuit to control seizures lasting langer than 5-10 minutes with medications, when the seizure is continues. Therefore, SE requires more active and dynamic management when compared to a singles simple seizure activity. The prevalence of SE is found to be at 41 per 100.000 people in a prospective, population-based study in the USA. It has been shown that those who have their first seizure activity by age one and 5 have an SE development risk of 70% and 20% respectively. Etiyology of SE is largely age dependent. Greater than 80% of SE before age 2 is due to febrile or acute symptomatic causes. Criptogenic or obscure symptomatic factors appear more prominent in older ages. Hypoxic and excitotoxic effects of SE impair neuronal plasticity in ensuing days. SE has negative effects also on cardiorespiratory system, hiddens and the lives. It this communıcation, SE is discussed in all aspeets in light of the current literatureKeywords: Status epilepticus, childTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(50):82-91
