Acute Infections That Are Caused Upper Airway Obstruction In Children
Dr. Murat DUMANa
aÇocuk Acil BD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Acquired upper airway obstruction is a common cause of respiratory emergencies in children. There are numerous causes of acute upper airway obstructions in children but most are secondary to infections, foreign bodies, and trauma. Prompt recognition and appropriate management of the child presenting with upper airway obstruction remains critical, because certain causes can progress rapidly from a mild to a potentially life threatening disease state. The clinical presentation of acute upper airway obstruction will depend on the degree and location of the obstruction. A correct diagnosis can often be made by history and physical examination, but additional studies may be useful in selected cases. The child’s clinical appearance is the most reliable indicator of severity, and measurable signs are of less value. Therapy is aimed primarily at maintaining a patent airway and prescribing appropriate antimicrobials. This review discusses general principles of assessing and managing respiratory infectious emergencies in children, as well as clinical characteristics and treatment of specific conditions such as croup, epiglottitis, bacterial tracheitis, retropharyngeal abscess. Keywords: Pediatric, respiratory infectious emergency, croup, epiglottitis, bacterial tracheitis, retropharyngeal abscessTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(50):16-25
