aKardiyoloji Kliniği, Dr. Siyami Ersek Göğüs Kalp-Damar Cerrahisi Merkezi, İSTANBUL Acute heart failure(AHF) is a common cause of referral and admission to hospital. Although during the last 2 decades both the rates of in-hospital mortality and the length of hospital stays for patients with acute heart failure have progressively declined, hospital readmission rates and mortality rates in the weeks to months after readmission remain unacceptably high. Acute heart failure may be the first manifestation of disease or acute deterioration of chronic heart failure. The most frequent cardiac causes of acute heart failure include progresssion of the underlying disease, ischemia or infarction, arterial hypertension and arrhythmias. The management of heart failure consumes 1-2%of health care expenditure in European countries, which it makes AHF important and costly medical syndrome in cardiology.
Patients with AHF have a very poor prognosis. So preventive mesaurements are very important Expert cares by a specialist heart failure team that can rapidly initiate medical management and attend to the information needs of the patient and family, are required. Keywords: Acute heart failure, diagnostic methods, treatment optionsTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(46):30-41
