Gastrointestinal Foreign Bodies In Children
Dr. S. Cüneyt KARAKUŞ,a Dr. Ramazan KARABULUTa
aÇocuk Cerrahisi AD, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Foreign body ingestion is a common emergency in pediatric surgical practise. Most cases of foreign body ingestions occur in the pediatric population, with a peak incidence at the ages between six months and six years. Coins are the most commonly ingested foreign bodies in children in Turkey. A radiograph of the neck, chest and abdomen should be obtained in every suspected ingestion. Although most cases end uneventfully, all esophageal foreign bodies, especially batteries, should be removed as soon as possible. Rigid esophagoscopy is the most effective and safety method. Objects that have passed the esophagus generally do not cause symptoms unless complications, such as bowell perforation or obstruction, occur. Keywords: Foreign bodies; eating; childTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(15):57-61
