aKalp ve Damar Cerrahisi AD, Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ISPARTA The widespread use of thrombolytics in acute coronary syndromes decrease the incidence of postinfarction ventricular septal defect. The grave prognosis of the disease and mortal outcome give a special interest to the surgical management. Despite reports of transcatheter closure of ventricular septal defects, non-surgical treatment is generally accepted to be inadequate. Progressive deterioration in haemodynamic status makes surgical intervention often the only realistic option. Preoperative cardiogenic shock and early postinfarction septal rupture carry a grave prognosis. Keywords: Heart rupture, post-infarction; shock, cardiogenic; coronary diseaseTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(7):24-30
