aKalp ve Damar Cerrahisi AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Congenital heart surgery, constituting a major part of cardiac surgery, has both anatomical and pathophysiological variability. This variability in congenital heart diseases is also seen in clinical aspect and also in medical and/or surgical treatment. As a result, when clinical presentation and treatment are concerned, we can see emergency situations. Although early interventions are necessary in many types of congenital heart diseases, the goal of ‘immediate interventions’ in this article is the earliest surgical approach after the patient is admitted to the hospital and following stabilisation of the patient’s clinical course; and/or deterioration of the clinical course despite maximum medical support. Keywords: Thoracic surgery; heart defects, congenitalTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(7):1-8
