Thoracotomy For Thoracic Surgery Emergencies

aGöğüs Cerrahisi AD, GATA, ANKARA Thoracic emergency conditions destroy pulmonary, circulating and the other systems when they are occured. The succes of treatment related with immediate diagnosis and treatment. Thoracic traumas exist a great amount of thoracic emergencies. Thoracic trauma is one of the leading causes of death in all age groups and accounts for 25-50% of all traumatic injuries. While the majority of patients with thoracic trauma can be managed conservatively, a small but significant number requires emergency or early thoracotomy as part of their initial life saving treatment.
Chest injuries in haemodynamically instable patients require emergency operative therapy. Thoracotomy has also been required for evacuation of pericardial tamponade, direct control of intrathoracic haemorrhage and selected patients with esophageal rupture.
This article aims to provide a review of pathophysiological features, technical manoeuvres and selective indications for emergency thoracotomy as a component of the initial treatment of trauma victims with thoracic injury.Keywords: Thoracotomy; thoracic injuriesTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(3):19-24
