Poisoning With Organophosphate Insecticide
Dr. Yeşim TUNÇOK,a Dr. Nil HOCAOĞLU AKSAYa
aFarmakoloji AD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Organophosphate insecticide (OPI) is one of the most common causes of poisoning with high morbidity and mortality rate in developing countries. The clinical manifestations (muscarinic, nicotinic and central nervous system) are due to an overactivity of the cholinergic systems as a result of inhibition of acetylcholinesterase by the OPI. The treatment of OPI poisoning is primarily by means of supportive therapy, decontamination and the use of spesific antidotes that include atropine and oximes. However, the role of oximes in human OPI poisoning is not clear. Controlled experimental and clinical research studies are needed to develop new antidotes and to establish the effectiveness of them for the treatment of OPI poisonings. Keywords: Organophosphate insecticide, poisoning, diagnosis, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(46):69-73
