aFarmakoloji AD, Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, TRABZON Drugs with or without prescription are used by the pregnant women during their pregnancy. The pharmacokinetics of the drugs also changes due to the physiologic alterations in pregnant women and these changes can affect the physiology and growth of the embryo or fetus. If the drug exposure of the pregnant woman occurs especially in the first trimester and at high doses, serious malformations can be seen in the fetus. According to the data of the animal and human studies, FDA and such institutions classify the drugs due to their teratogenicity risks. This classification and also the Teratogenicity Information Services are used in the choice of the drugs that will be used for the treatment or diagnosis of the diseases in the pregnant women. A risk evaluation for teratogenicity must be done for the pregnant women who are exposed to drugs unaware of their pregnancy. The Teratogenicity Information Services have to be structured in all over the country which will give a consultant service for the drug choice in pregnancy and for the risk evaluation of the pregnant women exposed to drugs. Keywords: Pregnancy, congenital malformations, teratogenicity information servicesTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(46):63-68
