Retinal Emergencies
Dr. Sibel KADAYIFÇILARa
aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Retinal emergencies can be grouped as traumatic, not related to trauma directly and infectious. Commotio retina, chorioretinitis sclopetaria, retinal tears, macular hole, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and vitreous hemmorrhage can be seen after a blunt trauma. The most serious complications of an open globe injury involving the posterior segment are tractional retinal detachment and ocular hypotonia. Intraocular foreign body should be ruled out in all cases with ocular trauma.
Central retinal artery occlusion, ischemic central retinal vein occlusion, vitreous or retinal hemorrhages and retinal detachment causing acute loss of vision are examples of nontraumatic emergencies. Endophthalmitis, acute retinal necrosis and cytomegalovirus retinitis are the most common infectious retinal emergencies.Turkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(42):74-79
