Infectious Endophthalmitis And Panophthalmitis
Dr. Remzi AVCIa
aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, BURSA Infective endophthalmitis is an inflammatory process resulting from invasion of intraocular structures with bacteria, fungi or parasitic agents. This picture is the most serious complication seen after intraocular surgery or penetrating eye injuries. The infection is named as panophthalmitis when sclera and extraocular orbital structures are involved as a result of spread of infection. The incidence of endophthalmitis has declined to 0.07% owing to modern surgical techniques and instruments, compliance to rules of asepsis and antisepsis, the use of povidon iodine and antibiotics in recent years. In addition, successful results have been obtained in these cases by means of intraocular applications of new generation and strong antibiotics in time with effective routes as well as modern vitreoretinal surgical techniques. Keywords: Endophthalmitis, panophthalmitis, medical and surgical treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(42):57-63
