Treatment Strategies In Corneal Penetrations
Dr. Banu TURGUT ÖZTÜRK,a Dr. Nazmi ZENGİNa
aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi, KONYA Preservation of the natural corneal contour and achieving wound healing with minimum scar is the primary aim in corneal penetrations, which contitute a major cause of vision loss particularly in the younger age groups. Recently, with the progress in understanding corneal anatomy, physiology and wound healing, many changes have been introduced in the treatment strategies and better treatment results are bein gachieved. While a better control of infections is achieved with the advent of new antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents, therapeutic contact lense placement and the use of tissue adhesives, opened a new era in penetrating corneal injuries. Refractive features of the cornea are better understood and new suture techniques have been developed by the introduction of corneal topography. But, especially in traumas affecting the visual axis, it is not possible to obtain healing without a postoperative scar development. Therefore, it should be kept in mind that, besides therapeutic approaches, augmenting the preventive measures is also essential. Keywords: Cerneal, penetration, injirie, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(42):18-25
