aKadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Preterm labor and its complications are one of the most commonly encountered problems during pregnancy. In the last two decades incidence of preterm labor had risen primarily due to aggressive medical management of medical disorders accompanying pregnancy, multifetal pregnancies due to increased use and availability of assisted reproductive technologies, physician allowed near term deliveries (gestational age > 32-34 weeks). On the other hand incidence of normal preterm births before 37 weeks and preterm births associated with preterm premature rupture of membranes had decreased. This decrease in the incidence of preterm birth is mainly due to progress in the prediction methods and more effective treatment options. And progress has been made towards understanding the multifactorial etiology of preterm labor and prevention of preterm birth which also adds to the decrease in the incidence of preterm births. With progress much better outcomes can be obtained for both the mother and fetus. Keywords: Preterm labor, preterm birth, prediction, risk factors, etiology, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(24):29-41
