Nonobstetric Acute Abdominal Emergencies And Trauma In Pregnancy
Dr. M. Tuncay ÖZGÜN,a Dr. Cem BATUKAN,a Dr. Mustafa BAŞBUĞa
aKadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum AD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ Acute abdominal conditions developing in pregnancy produce significant diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. Symptoms may mimic those of normal pregnancy. Signs are often altered, obscured or absent. Investigations are complicated by the normal changes during pregnancy. The risks to the fetus of ionising radiation, analgesics, antibiotics and anaesthetics must all be borne in mind. Treatment may be limited by the need to avoid or minimise surgery. All of these factors can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment for some severe intra-abdominal emergencies, which can pose significant threat to both mother and fetus. Trauma occurs in 8% of pregnancies and the most common cause is motor vehicle accidents. Following blunt abdominal trauma, abruption of the placenta is the most common cause of fetal loss. Perimortem cesarean section should be considered within 4-5 minutes of unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Keywords: Pregnancy, emergencies, multiple trauma, fetal deathTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(24):19-24
