Dr. İnci SÜLEYMANLARa
aGastroenteroloji BD, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANTALYA Complications developing during the course of inflammatory bowel disease may be life threatening. The most frequent complications encountered in ulcerative colitis are fulminant colitis, toxic megacolon and bleeding. These may resolve with medical therapy, but surgical intervention is required frequently. Abscesses and intestinal obstruction are the most frequent complications developing during the course of Crohn’disease. Medical therapy is instituted as the first line therapy; however these complications also require surgical intervention and intestinal resection is performed. Ocular, thromboembolic and hepatobiliary complications are the most common extraintestinal complications. Keywords: Inflammatory bowel disease, toxic megacolon, fulminant colitis, extraintestinal complicationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(15):73-80
