Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Dr. Banu ERİŞ GÜLBAY,a Dr. Zeynep Pınar ÖNENa
aGöğüs Hastalıkları AD Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is an important health care problem. CO poisoning can be difficult to diagnose because the common symptoms are nonspecific. The findings related to tissue hypoxia in CO poisoning are mostly observed on central nerve system and cardio vascular system. The measured carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) is used to diagnosis and to follow-up in CO poisoning. Breathing 100% oxygen and/or hyperbaric oxygen treatment are preferred according to the patients’ symptoms, underlying diseases and the level of COHb. It must be remembered that CO poisoning can be prevented by reducing exposure to CO through appropriate methods. Keywords: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, tissue hypoxia, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), 100% oxygen, hiperbaric oxygenTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(11):109-112
