Bronchiolitis Obliterans
Dr. Füsun ÜLGERa
aGöğüs Hastalıkları AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA The term bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is commonly used to describe a number of unrelated conditions whose common end point is functional obstruction of bronchioles. BO has been described after some exposure, illness and transplantation.Any damage to bronchiolar epithelium may lead to excessive proliferation of granulation tissue. The reason this occurs in only a percentage of patients probably reflects both differences in the magnitude of the provacative stimulus and the abnormalities in the responses of host tissue. BO is classified clinically based on etiology and histopathologically based on tissue morphology. Early recognition and therapy of BO is important because treatment is often ineffective when the disease has reached the late, fibrotic stage. Corticosteroids play an important role and, if administered early, may significantly alter the disease process. Keywords: Bronchiolitis obliterans, BOOP, corticosteroidsTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(11):58-60
