Acute Exacerbation Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (copd)
Dr. Turan ACICAN,a Dr. Banu ERİŞ GÜLBAYa
aGöğüs Hastalıkları AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) are a common cause of morbidity and mortality. The common etiological factors are infections and air pollutants. Treatment of copd exacerbations improves outcomes and the mainstay of treatment involves increasing bronchodilator therapy and systemic glucocorticoids according to severity of exacerbations. If the sputum purulence is increased in a copd patient with exacerbation, the use of antibiotic therapy is available. Noninvasive ventilation has been shown to reduce intubation rates and shorten lengths of hospitalization in those with respiratory failure. Keywords: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), exacerbation, bronchodilator therapy, systemic glucocorticoids, Noninvasive ventilationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(11):40-44
