Foreign Body Aspiration
Dr. Ayten KAYI CANGIR,a Dr.Hakan KUTLAYa
aGöğüs Cerrahisi AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a life-threatening emergency and requires prompt removal. FBA is most common in children (1-3 year) and elderly (>50 years) age groups. FBA may remain undetected due to atypical history or misleading clinical and radiological findings. The most common signs and symptoms of FBA are choking, coughing, wheezing and decreased breathing sounds. Treatment of FBA is reasonably prompt endoscopic removal under conditions of maximum safety and minimum trauma. Some negative bronchoscopies are necessary in order to prevent the morbidity that occurs from a missed FBA in these cases. Continued public education is of paramount importance in prevention of FBA.Keywords: Tracheobronchial-foreign body-aspirationTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(11):17-21
