The Pathophysiology And Treatment Of Hyponatraemic Encephalopathy
Dr. Fatih TANRIVERDİ,a Dr. Fahri BAYRAMa
aİç Hastalıkları AD, Endokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ Hyponatraemia is a frequent disorder which occurs in both the out-patients and hospitalized patients. Hyponatraemic encephalophathy (HE) can be not easy to identify because the most common symptoms are non-specific and can be mistakenly attributed to other causes. Presenting symptoms in the patients with HA are usually headache, nausea, vomiting and confusion. The main reasons of HE in hospitalized patients are inappropriate ADH secretion or operations. The major risk factors affecting the brain adaptation and HA can be summarized as: age, gender related hormonal factors and hypoxemia. As a result the first step in hyponatraemia management is defining the risk factors and risk groups for HA development, and preventing especially hospitalized patients. Although fluid restriction is enough in asymptomatic hyponatraemia, urgent treatment (3% hypertonic saline) in symptomatic patients is crucial to prevent neurological sequel and mortality. Keywords: Hyponatraemia, encephalopathy, brain edema, ADHTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2006, 2(7):68-72
